Admission to Student Teaching
Student teaching, the culminating experience for all undergraduates who aspire to become teachers, involves full-time placement in a public school classroom for 15 weeks under the supervision of a classroom teacher and University professor. Student teaching allows students to gain experience and confidence and to demonstrate competence in teaching for an extended period of time.
Requirements for Admission to Student Teaching:
- Completion of all course work with a GPA of 2.5 or better
- GPA of 2.75 or better in all professional education course work
- Grades of C or better in all courses required for licensure
- Advisor’s recommendation
Curriculum
During their freshman and sophomore years, undergraduate students who intend to pursue teaching licensure in elementary education take general courses in a variety of academic areas. Successful performance in these courses establishes the foundation for their admission to a Teacher Education Program.
Elementary Education courses are typically taken during students’ junior and senior years. These courses include professional education courses and field experiences in local schools. Students who complete course work in the Elementary Education Program may then apply to student teach.
Financial Assistance
The Office of Academic Programs and Student Services maintains a file of information on scholarships and loans which are targeted especially for eligible education majors.
