Advanced Literacy Instruction & Intervention Certificate
The Advanced Literacy Instruction & Intervention Certificate
Literacy and reading instruction have always required the use of data to inform instruction; however, the move in recent years has been towards equipping teachers and other educational professionals to gather and analyze data to target instruction to meet the needs of individuals and groups of students. The Advanced Literacy Instruction & Intervention Certificate Program (ALII) reflects these changes by providing K-12 classroom teachers and other professionals involved with literacy with more advanced skills in using data to create instruction and interventions for groups and individual students through the 12-hour certificate. The program:
- Prepares students to use of data to inform reading and writing instruction
- Create interventions for striving readers and English Language Learners
- Allows students to move on to the M.Ed. in Reading if they choose to continue
This is a 12-hour certificate program that is delivered in an online format that focuses on helping teachers enhance literacy outcomes for diverse learners. Students in the certificate program take READ 6250 or READ 6255 and three other READ courses:
- READ 6250 Emergent and Elementary Literacy or READ 6255 Middle/Secondary Reading and Writing — take one based on the grade level(s) you work with
- READ 6252 K-12 Writing Development and Instruction
- READ 6204 Teaching Reading to ELLs
- READ 6260 Diagnostic Assessment and Instruction in Reading
All coursework in the Advanced Literacy Instruction & Intervention Certificate can apply towards the M.Ed. in Reading Education at UNC Charlotte for students who wish to go beyond the certificate and earn their master’s degree. Here is a link to our graduate reading program course descriptions. Both the ALII Certificate and the M.Ed. are delivered online using the Canvas learning management system and, in some courses, video meetings in platforms such as Zoom. The M.Ed. in Reading Education is a 33 credit-hour program that qualifies most graduates who hold a North Carolina professional educator’s license for an advanced North Carolina K-12 Reading Education license at the master’s level.
